Sign the petition: suspend logging and hunting during the Covid-19 state of emergency
The state of emergency has triggered an emergency in Romania’s forests: a record number of shipments was legally registered in the penultimate week of March. Almost 80 000 authorised shipments travelled across the country, loaded with felled trees. From the latest National Forest Inventory, we can deduce that for every tree felled legally, another is felled illegally. This means that a figure of at least 160 000 shipments seems very realistic, especially as the Forest Guard and Environmental Guard worked exclusively online during this period.
We have launched a petition addressed to Mr Ludovic Orban, calling for logging and hunting to stop during the state of emergency. President Klaus Iohannis said he was frightened when he learned that in previous years the average had been 38.6 million m3 felled per year, of which 20 illegally.
If each shipment during this emergency period carried around 20m3 (a lorry without a trailer), and if logging continues at this pace, then this year we could lose 86.4 million m3 of wood. The Forest Guard went fishing this week and managed to confiscate 0.0025 million m3 of illegally felled timber.
Sign the petition too and send it to all the nature lovers you know. We need every signature!
