Energy & Decarbonisation

All campaigns

The roadmap

It is no longer a debate.
It is a physical reality.

Fossil fuels are running out

The climate is destabilising

The current energy system is no longer sustainable

The question is not whether we change.
The question is how quickly and how intelligently we do it.

The simple truth about energy

We do not produce energy. We just burn.

That means:

  • → we take resources from the ground
  • → we burn them
  • → we obtain short-term energy
  • → we leave behind pollution and depleted resources

On Earth, we produce nothing. We just burn everything.

The limits are real (and inevitable)

Time horizon

Oil and gas will run out this century.
Coal and nuclear fuels — in the next.

Nuclear energy

  • ✗ is very expensive
  • ✗ takes a very long time and has a short life — construction takes 20 years, use a maximum of 30 years
  • ✗ involves risks — accidents are rare, but devastating
  • ✗ produces radioactive waste

Radioactive waste remains dangerous for thousands of years.
There is currently no safe, permanent and globally accepted solution for it. This means we are moving the problem into the future.

The roadmap

1

Reducing consumption — eliminating waste

The cheapest energy is the energy you do not consume.

  • ● building insulation
  • ● efficient appliances
  • ● optimised transport
2

Local energy production

The energy of the future no longer comes only from large power plants.

  • ● solar panels on homes
  • ● solar farms on degraded land
  • ● wind turbines in suitable areas
3

Energy storage — the key to the system

That is why we need storage.

What does “pumped-storage hydropower” mean?

  • ● in practice, we move water between two reservoirs
  • ● we pump water during the day when we have surplus energy from other sources
  • ● we generate electricity when needed, especially at night

It is like a giant battery.

Romania can meet its storage targets without painful compromises →

4

Electrification

  • ● electric cars
  • ● heat pumps
  • ● electrified industry
5

Smart grids

  • ● efficient distribution
  • ● real-time balancing

Myths vs Reality

Myth

“Climate change is not real”

Reality

It is visible and measured

Myth

“It is not caused by humans”

Reality

Fossil fuels are the main cause

Myth

“It is too expensive”

Reality

Renewables are already cheap

A fundamental principle

The transition must NOT destroy nature

We do NOT sacrifice nature for energy.

Intact nature is worth more than the energy produced there.

Romania’s Living Backbone must be protected

  • ✓ forests
  • ✓ rivers
  • ✓ the Carpathians
  • ✓ wilderness areas

National parks are NOT industrial zones

Intact nature is worth more than the energy produced there. Installing wind turbines or solar panels in national parks would destroy precisely what we aim to protect.

Conclusion: the real risk for Romania

We are not just talking about energy.

We are talking about Romania’s habitability.

If we do not make the transition:

  • ✗ temperatures will continue to rise
  • ✗ drought will become normal
  • ✗ agriculture will be increasingly affected
  • ✗ water resources will decline
  • ✗ cities will become increasingly unbearable in summer
  • ✗ extreme events will become more frequent

This is not a theoretical scenario. It is already happening.

What an uninhabitable country means

  • ● villages abandoned because of drought
  • ● harvests lost year after year
  • ● internal and external migration
  • ● pressure on infrastructure and cities
  • ● conflicts over resources

Romania risks becoming a country where life is increasingly difficult.

Why energy is the key

Energy underpins every system:

agriculture

industry

transport

water

health

If energy is unstable, expensive and polluting, the entire system becomes unstable.

The real choice is not between fossil and renewable energy.

It is between a stable, habitable and safe country — or a country affected by permanent crises.

Romania in 2050 — two scenarios

Scenario 1

We continue as we do today

  • ✗ extreme heatwaves every summer
  • ✗ chronic drought in the south and east
  • ✗ massive agricultural losses
  • ✗ ever less water in rivers and groundwater
  • ✗ high and unstable energy bills
  • ✗ dependence on imports and geopolitical crises
  • ✗ migration from affected areas

A hotter, poorer and more unstable country.

Scenario 2

Smart decarbonisation

  • ✓ local, clean and predictable energy
  • ✓ cooler cities with cleaner air
  • ✓ adapted, more resilient agriculture
  • ✓ water protected by healthy ecosystems
  • ✓ more stable bills in the long term
  • ✓ real energy independence
  • ✓ stronger, safer communities

A safer, healthier and more stable country.

Decisions in the coming years will determine what Romania looks like in 2050.

Final conclusion

The current system is coming to an end

Nature is the foundation of life

Energy must change quickly

But it must be done correctly:

  • ✓ without destroying nature
  • ✓ without dangerous compromises
  • ✓ without false solutions

The choice is simple:

clean energy + protected nature = a future

continuing the current model = a risk of uninhabitability
