Romania’s skeleton
Do you want 10% of Romania to be strictly protected?
10% strict protection
STRICTLY PROTECT 10 % OF ROMANIA
For more than ten years, we have tried to protect Romania’s valuable natural heritage through various means, and now this is becoming more urgent than ever. The oldest forests, Europe’s last vast wilderness areas, home to species that disappeared from other countries long ago, are currently unprotected, being destroyed as you read this text. Their time is limited.
Less than 1% of Romania’s territory is strictly protected now. Nature is exploited commercially rather than valued as the support for life. In the summer of 2020, Agent Green launched its Vision for Romania’s Forests, and the European Union launched its Biodiversity Strategy for the next 10 years, both suggesting full protection for 10% of the country’s territory to safeguard national security, as well as the urgent improvement of Romania’s forest heritage and restoration of ecosystem services, ensuring the social, ecological and economic conditions for the country’s development.
Get involved too, so that the last primary and old-growth forests are strictly protected to conserve biodiversity and serve as carbon reservoirs to combat climate change, stabilising local communities through ecotourism and solutions close to nature. This way, we can all live better and healthier lives, and preserve and pass on Romania’s natural wonders, true natural laboratories.
In addition to the 500 000 hectares of primary and old-growth forests, mentioned as early as Romania’s sustainable development strategy in 1999 and in scientific books, subsequently identified in the PRIMOFARO study updated in 2020, we propose a strategic choice of new national parks for protection, including in lowland areas and the wetlands in the south of the country.
AGENT GREEN’S VISION FOR ROMANIA’S FORESTS
What do we ask for?
10% STRICT PROTECTION for Romania’s territory
No intervention, hunting or deforestation, only ecotourism trails and local products.
We want strict protection for:
– All forests over 100 years old – 800 000 hectares
The Făgăraș Mountains
Lowland wetlands and the north of Western Gorj
We have the right to a clean and healthy environment, and we have the resources to create a true biodiversity laboratory and a carbon reservoir to combat climate change that is particularly important for the entire European Union. Romania is Europe’s lung. Old-growth forests connect the past and the future; we will never be able to get them back if we do not protect those that remain NOW.
How?
In Parliament. Through advocacy activities and participation in public debates
In court. We currently have more than 130 lawsuits through which we are trying to protect areas that are protected only on paper
Online We launched the petition PROTECT 10% OF ROMANIA
Offline. We are preparing a flashmob. When the restrictions end, we dance for the environment. Sign up here
