“Recycle” TV spot – a national non-commercial campaign to encourage plastic recycling
The planet is drowning in plastic. Romania is drowning in plastic. Every citizen ingests plastic through the air they breathe, the water they drink and the food they eat. It is time to change how we produce, consume and dispose of plastic.
Officially, Romania recycles only 11% of the waste it produces, placing it near the bottom of Europe in this respect, with a rate four times lower than the European average. It is a disaster that we ingest through dangerous fine particles and see on riverbanks, in fields, in forests, everywhere. Single-use plastic (bags, plates, cutlery, cups, packaging, cotton buds, balloons, cigarette filters, wet wipes and other plastic hygiene products) will not be removed from the Romanian market before 2030, although the EU banned it in 2019. The Deposit-Return System has been repeatedly postponed and is still not in force even now. This system has the potential to reduce litter by over 80%, while recycling rates for drinks packaging can reach 90–98%. It would ensure that any buyer in Romania received 50 bani back for containers of up to 3 litres when returning them to the shop.
Because the situation is out of control, the authorities do too little and citizens also have an important responsibility, Agent Green proposes a national non-commercial campaign to increase awareness and, consequently, separate collection and recycling. The environmental organisation proposes that the media broadcast the public-interest TV spot entitled “Recycle” as frequently and for as long as possible.
