Letter to non-ambitious Romanian MEPs to support the Nature Restoration Law

Dear Mr. Traian BĂSESCU, Cristian-Silviu BUŞOI, Tudor CIUHODARU, Dacian CIOLOŞ, Dan-Ştefan MOTREANU, Dan Nica

Dear Ms. Rovana Plumb,

Dear MEPs,

For some surprising reason you are not among the ambitious MEPs supporting a strong Nature Restoration law in the UE. This cannot be true. There must be a misunderstanding.

Therefore, I am writing to urge you to support the strongest version of the Nature Restoration law in the upcoming votes. It is concerning to see the recent debates to reject the proposed EU law especially given the arguments used around decreased employment and costs, which we do not believe reflect the reality of social issues in EU forestry.

It is crucial to explore all options for promoting a sustainable sector while protecting our environment, and the Nature Restoration Law can be a catalyst for this. One of the opportunities that better management of forests can provide is the creation of new green jobs in forestry, which would counteract a negative trend left by industrial forestry.

Forest Europe, which produces a report on the state of forests every five years, says clearly: Employment in the forest sector in the EU27 and the UK decreased by about 32% from 2000 to 2015 (p.179). This is under the current industry practices where harvesting practices offer low returns to small forest owners in many cases.

Moreover, human and ecosystem vulnerability are interdependent, and strongly influenced by unsustainable consumption and production, and persistent unsustainable management of land. Therefore, it is essential to address these challenges through binding requirements in the NRL for more sustainable forestry, which supports new economic models.

Therefore, I would like to request a meeting to discuss the arguments that are circulating and explore potential solutions, and in the meantime urge you to vote for a livable environment for people in our home country.

I would appreciate it if you could let me know your availability in the coming weeks to schedule a meeting to discuss this issue further. Thank you for your attention to this matter, and I look forward to hearing back from you soon.

Best wishes,

Gabriel Paun, President of Agent Green
